Ruby is an American Toad. She was rescued from our mother’s basement in the winter of 2015 after construction work had opened up small holes around the windows. Toads hibernate in winter – called brumation – and need to bulk up on food and have a natural cool-down period. Disturbing this cycle by being trapped in a warm basement with no food or water for a period of time could have left her unable to settle into a normal winter cycle and could have caused her death. Because of this, we chose to rehabilitate her and then keep her as the cold weather had already set in. Her red coloration, while a bit unusual, does occur in nature.
